Bucknall Road slipway (Caldon Canal)

The slipway sits on the Caldon Canal's climb away from Etruria Junction, where it leaves the Trent and Mersey Canal, on a narrow, single-line summit approach; maximum craft dimensions on this pound are 21.95 metres in length, 2.13 metres beam and 1.12 metres draught, indicating a shallow, confined channel. Ivy House Lift Bridge (Bridge 11), an electrically operated lift bridge, crosses about 300 metres south-west of the launch, and the Bucknall Road dual carriageway (Bridge 12) crosses directly overhead. About 150 metres north-east lies Northwood Winding Hole, a boat turning point, beyond which a small council-owned woodland strip lines the towpath before the canal leaves the built-up area on its way towards Milton and the Stockton Brook lock flight.

The banks here run through the former industrial heart of the Potteries, and surviving canalside pottery buildings remain visible from the water, including bottle kilns near Bridge 9 and the Victorian Emma Bridgewater pottery works at Lichfield Street, a short distance south-west. Pottery was carried by narrowboat between Milton and Hanley until 1990, and the canal continues to carry powered narrowboat traffic on the climb towards Leek and Froghall.
