Wareham Town put-in
Abbot's Quay stands where the River Frome becomes tidal at Wareham, a few miles upstream of Poole Harbour, often described as one of the largest natural harbours in the world. The quay is the town's working waterfront, shared with a boat hire business that has run from here since 1950, and from it the river opens downstream toward the harbour's wide mudflats and saltmarsh.
The quay and the harbour beyond
The slipway shares the quay with Wareham Boat Hire, a boat hire and paddlesport operator that has run from Abbot's Quay since 1950; the business puts its own through-traffic at around 20,000 visitors a year, and its life jackets, paddles and fuel are unpacked onto the quayside through the season.
Downstream, the Frome opens into intertidal mud and saltmarsh that draw large numbers of wading birds and wildfowl through the winter. A count of recreational disturbance across the harbour recorded canoeists causing around 15% of the birds flushed from these flats, behind dog walkers with dogs off the lead (40%) and walkers (17%).
