Buckler's Hard slipway, Beaulieu River

Launch — A concrete slipway within the five Gold Anchor-accredited Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour, landing directly into the tidal channel of the Beaulieu River. Beaulieu Enterprises Ltd owns and runs it, trading as Buckler's Hard Yacht Harbour. Contact the Harbour Office on 01590 616200 or harbour.office@beaulieu.co.uk. The harbour also has a chandlery, wash-down point, coin-operated launderette and toilets accessible 24 hours a day by door code.

Parking — The Buckler's Hard visitor car park is nearest, opening at 10am with last entry at 5pm and its exit gates locked at 8pm; there is no overnight parking. An overflow area takes motorhomes and trailers, and there are no height restrictions. Parking is charged separately from the launch fee, payable on the day.

Access — Reached off the M27 at junction 2, following brown tourist signs through Beaulieu village to Buckler's Hard, Hampshire, SO42 7XB. The Harbour Master grants access to the river only from this slipway. Launch slots are booked online in two-hour blocks and paid for at the Harbour Office before launching. The estate states that launching and landing anywhere else on the Beaulieu River is prohibited.

Season — The estate publishes no fixed closed season; the slipway and its online booking system operate year-round.

Regulations — Beaulieu River is not subject to a bespoke unpowered-craft registration scheme, though the estate advises paddlers to carry the correct licence if one is required for their craft. Byelaws set a 5 knot speed limit with minimum wash for the length of the river and require keeping to the starboard side of the fairway. Paddlers must not secure children or dogs to a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, and must wear lifejackets. Paddling upstream of the road bridge at Beaulieu village is off-limits to all craft, and paddlers may not enter any of the river's side creeks. Given the conservation designations covering the riverbanks, the estate asks paddlers to keep at least 50 metres from resting or feeding birds, avoid the shoreline except when launching or landing, and carry craft to the water rather than dragging it across mud and marsh.

The Beaulieu River is privately owned, its bed held by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu as part of the Beaulieu Estate. From Buckler's Hard the tidal river continues downstream through the New Forest to meet the Solent at Needs Ore, and runs upstream for around two and a half miles to the village of Beaulieu. Its banks carry Site of Special Scientific Interest, Special Area of Conservation and Special Protection Area status as part of the North Solent National Nature Reserve. The tall black chimney of the former Bailey's Hard brickworks, first fired in 1790, still stands over the water on the left bank above the harbour.

Upstream from the harbour, the paddle to Beaulieu passes Gilbury Pier before the banks close in beneath broadleaved woodland. The estate's own guide names Keeping Trees and Bailey's Hard as the only points along the way where a stop is permitted.

Seagrass meadows on the estuary bed are of high enough quality to serve as a donor site for restoration projects elsewhere in the Solent. The river also holds established haul-out sites for grey and common seals, which range into neighbouring Newtown Harbour.

Conditions to check

Shallow or rocky

The slipway dries out at low water and drops off steeply. The estate advises against using it within two hours either side of low water, but its safety-and-regulations page exempts SUPs and kayaks from that timing restriction — worth planning around the drop-off regardless.
