Bridlington Bay is a broad, shallow North Sea embayment in the lee of Flamborough Head, the chalk headland a few miles to the north-east that shelters the bay from northerly winds and carries the largest mainland seabird colony in the UK. The beach here forms the shoreward edge of the Smithic Sand, and its shoreline is defended by a sea wall and wooden groynes.
